Pile the Toppings with a Gourmet Waffle Bar
Hosting a waffle bar is a great way to get acquainted with residents. It also makes a perfect early morning meet up or weekend brunch. The nooks and crannies in the waffles can hold lot of extra treats and are the perfect plain base for a variety of toppings. Preparations 1. For waffle bar that runs smoothly you’re going to want to have at least two or three waffle irons that you’re working to crank out the waffles. You can borrow from residents and employees in advance, or purchase waffle irons ($20) specifically for the event. 2. Mix the batter the morning of the event and keep it in large pitchers to make the process a bit faster. 3. ...

Go Green with Seed Ball Landscaping
Image source: Creek Life If you are like most communities, you have a dry or unattractive corner in, or near, your property - perhaps a spot that doesn’t get well-watered or that gets a lot of sun. One creative and fun solution to that bare patch is to plan to add life to that area after holding a seed ball building workshop. Seed balls, also known as earth balls, seed bombs, or green grenades, are earthen balls that contain a variety of hearty seeds. Guerilla activists and gardening groups generally create these easily thrown balls of seed to beautify areas of the city or landscape that are hard to reach by traditional gardening means. The balls are tossed over fences, into abandoned lots, on the side of the freeway, along vacant stretches of highway, and in other parts of town that could...

Organizing a Mini Watermelon Festival
August 3rd is National Watermelon Day, so what better way to celebrate than with a mini watermelon festival? When organizing a party of all things watermelon, consider having watermelon themed drinks, eats, deserts, decorations, crafts, and watermelon carving (who said carving was only for pumpkins?) *BONUS* If you are feeling adventurous you can also prepare and/or serve pickled water melon rinds (a southern delicacy) and toasted watermelon seeds – which are actually a very healthy treat! Drinks and Eats Fruit salads, desserts, and smoothies can all be easily made with watermelon as a main ingredient, but there are other recipes for less traditional fare: Grilled Watermelon is sure to be a hit – brushed with olive oil and sprinkled with sea salt and pepper this is an unusual mix of sweet and savory....

Build Your Own Hot Dog Party
The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council designates July as National Hot Dog Month and July 23 as National Hot Dog Day! Even though you’ll have to wait until August for National Mustard Day, you can celebrate this favorite food by creating a Hot Dog Bar for your residents. Include all the condiments and sides needed to replicate the variety of ways to remix the classic hot dog. Prepping for the event When putting together your Hot Dog Bar, be sure to keep these pointers in mind: • Ensure that you have a few kosher and vegetarian versions of dogs available - for those residents that want or need them. • Keep lots of extra serving spoons available in case someone walks off with one of them accidentally. ...

Build Buzz with a Community Spelling Bee
Educational events are more than just fun community-builders, they also benefit residents in a concrete way by pushing children to excel academically and boost student morale. Hosting a spelling bee in your community is a great way to encourage learning and healthy competition between residents. It’s also a great way to increase opportunities for marketing your community while opening up lines of collaboration with other local organizations and businesses. Preparations 1) Well in advance of the event, reach out to local businesses and bookstores to request donated prizes. This could include coupons for free meals or gift certificates for new or used books. 2) Be sure to advertise the event, and the awards, well in advance so that children have a...
