“Taxes Can Be Fun” Filing Party

If there is one thing we all hate to do, it’s our taxes. But it doesn’t have to be a horrible and stressful event. Instead, make it into a fun community affair! Bring people together to get the help they need while also encouraging them to do their taxes early!

There are a few different ways to facilitate a community tax preparation event.

Create a Safe and Organized Space

You’ll want to make sure that you have plenty of forms and instruction packs available for residents. In many states, you can pick up tax form packets from your local library or IRS office.

Additionally, here are some supplies you may find helpful to have on hand:

•Tables and chairs

•Power strips for people to charge their phones and laptops

•Scrap paper for note-taking

•Clipboards

•Pencils and pencil sharpeners

•Erasers

•Pens

•Calculators (these can be purchased inexpensively from your local dollar store)

•Wi-Fi access or a clubhouse computer for those who want to e-file their returns.

•Office copy machine and copy paper for scanning and printing copies of returns

•Envelopes for things like copies of returns and receipts

•Water, coffee, tea, and simple (non-sticky or greasy) snacks

Hire Professional Help

Hire professional tax preparers to come to your community for an informational workshop or advice-giving event. You can invite them to spend the afternoon in your community to offer their expertise and advice to community residents.

Instead of a walk-in service, you can also pre-book paid and/or discounted slots with the accountant to ensure they have a fully booked afternoon of residents who want to have a chat.

Support for Low-income, Disabled, or Elderly Residents

Refer qualifying residents to the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program or the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program if they need additional help filling out their tax returns.

Investigate and share nearby locations, or share a link to the location locator on the IRS site so residents can find the extra help they need in their area.

With a little bit of planning, you can make a welcoming and inviting space for residents to come and fill out their taxes together. This event will prove that even boring or tedious tasks can be made a bit more fun with some community friendship, commiseration, and support.
