“Green Your Clean” Meet-up

“Green your clean” with a home cleanser DIY community meet-up!

One powerful thing we can do to make our homes and communities safer is switch to using chemical-free home cleaning products!

More than 50 million Americans experience allergies and asthma each year as a result of environmental irritants and toxins. Modern cleaning products can contain as many as 1000 different chemicals! Many of these chemicals can irritate the skin and lungs or cause asthma symptoms - even in otherwise healthy individuals.

To combat these harmful effects, have residents “green their clean” with this home cleaning supply crafting workshop!

Making the Stations

Set up multiple tables and stations where you can demo the process for making each “green” home cleanser. You can also demo how to actually use that particular cleanser!

Have materials; like cleanser ingredients, spray bottles, labels, and markers, on hand for residents to mix up and label their own cleansers.

***TIP*** While the ingredients in these recipes are relatively low cost, it can add up. If your community needs to penny pinch, have residents register and pay in advance. You can also collect the fee on the day of the event to recover your costs.

Heavy-Duty Carpet Cleaner

  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 1/4 cup salt
  • 1/4 cup borax

For this heavy-duty carpet cleaner, make a paste using 1/4 cup each of vinegar, salt, and borax. Rub the paste into the carpet stain and leave for a few hours. Vacuum when mostly dry.

Bathroom Mold Deterrent

  • 1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide (3%)
  • 1 cup water

In many communities, bathroom mold - especially in tile grout - is a common problem. It can also be a health concern!

To deter the growth of mold in bathtubs and showers, mix one-part hydrogen peroxide (3%) with two parts water in a spray bottle. Spray on areas with mold and wait at least one hour before rinsing or using the shower.

***TIP*** Always test products in a small hidden area. Results may vary. Use caution with any new product in your home.

These substitution cleaning formulas are designed to help minimize the use of toxic substances in your community. They’ll also reduce the harmful environmental impact caused by the manufacture, use, and disposal of toxins.

However, even though the ingredients are relatively safer, ensure residents are still accurately labeling all their DIY cleansers. Remind residents to keep these homemade cleaning products, and all other cleaning products, out of the reach of childre
