Goodwill on the Go!
This event that has a community service focus while also serving your residents. This even doesn't require residents to bring anything to the office, and doesn't cost anything for you either! The best part? It serves your local Goodwill or Salvation Army with much needed items. The basic idea is that you will provide large plastic garbage bags in the office for residents to get if needed, they fill them with gently used items from their closet and home (no furniture), they RSVP with their apartment number, and they set their bag(s) outside their door by a certain time on a Saturday morning. The community staff drives through the community going to each RSVP door and picking up their donated items. The team then delivers the bags to a local Goodwill or Salvation Army (or other charity organization) for the residents. This is a...

Ice Cream Truck
Decorate a community golf cart in fun and bright colors then drive circles throughout the property with a cooler filled with icy treats. Hand them out to residents as they pass by or come home from work for a nice cool surprise for your residents as they come home from a long hard day at the office. A boombox with an Ice Cream Truck song plays repeatedly as you make your rounds for an hour or until the treats are gone. This is a quick and easy event on a hot summer day, particularly for properties with kids! Wear your community logo t-shirt or polo, wear that so you can obtain the highest visibility for your community.

You Never Know With Louweza
Our resident appreciation event was on Valentines Day during the Revolutionary War. Our residents believed we were going to have a history event night. We started out with dinner and wine. Then coffee and dessert. During coffee the residents were able to purchase raffle tickets for 3 prizes. During the week I had hints posted on the board for the gifts. Which was fun, and the money we raised went to the residents fund. When all the tickets were bought, the residents now were waiting for the the show. They kept asking when it will start. I then said "you never know with Louweza and her schedule". In came Louweza, a 1890-1900 Madame, lady of the evening. She was very funny and told us what it was like to be part of the Revolutionary War performing her services. She flirted with the crowd and it was very funny. At the...

Box Maze
A box maze can be a wonderful event for children and adults alike. The materials are free and minimal assembly required. Where to find the boxes: • Appliance stores • Sears • Grocery stores Lay out your design: Once you get them all in the apartment, line out the “design” for the box maze. Just like most mazes, we have one main line that works, and a bunch of dead ends. You’ll need flashlights: Get little flashlights or glow sticks for people to go through with, it gets REALLY dark in there. Glow sticks and flashlights are very cheap from Oriental Trading. Assemble: You open the boxes up, and attach them with tape. Use packing tape or duct tape, and not very expensive brand – it typically takes 4 rolls to do an...

Guess Who Luncheon
I manage a 55+ independent living senior community. Our budget is very low for resident events but per our LURA we are required to provide regular monthly events and activities. I have become very creative with activities at a very lost cost to the property. Last week we had a Guess Who Luncheon. This game is a way to bring laughs and fun to a group of seniors who want to get to know each other. This is how the game works. We had each resident bring a picture of them in their younger years or as a baby to the party. We set up a table early in the morning, prior to the game with a poster board so they could tape their picture on it. Once all pictures were displayed the pictures were numbered. Everyone received index cards and wrote down the number with the guess of...
